Fitness Instructor Official

Well I've gone and done it!  I'm am officially certified to teach CIZE and INSANITY LIVE!!!

It's so funny because I have been a stay at home mom for 9 years and people are always asking me , "So what are you going to do once all the kids are in school in a few years?"  I didn't want to go back to work!  Yes, my kids would be in school but that didn't mean that I was planning on sitting home on the couch all day.  I wanted to have the freedom to go on field trips with them, volunteer at their school, be the homeroom mom, surprise my husband at work for a lunch date!  I didn't want to have to be at a "normal" job every single day!  So when people would ask me this question I would respond with, "You know, I don't think I will go back to teaching, I'm not sure what I'll do, but we'll see!"  with a smile.

I thought about that question a lot and  I would talk to my husband and it always came back to Fitness.  I had told him for YEARS, "I'm not sure what I want to do but I want to do SOMETHING with Fitness!  It's my passion and maybe I can become a personal trainer to train moms from their home, or maybe even teach a fitness class?  I'm not sure but something with Fitness!"

I had no clue how this dream would become a reality but I could feel it in my bones and knew that's what I wanted to make happen!  The Summer of 2014 I was introduced to Beachbody and became a fitness coach.  My dream job was starting to come to fruition and I loved every second of it!   I had more energy than ever before and that excitement transferred from my workouts to all other aspects of my life.  I got more chores done around the house, was a better Mom, a better wife, I knew I had to share this with others!

When CIZE came out, I knew I had to get certified!  I have grown up dancing and have really missed it so much!  I knew this workout was for me and signed up so I could start teaching and share it with others.  I was NERVOUS!  OMGOSH, so nervous!

What if I forgot the steps and just stood up there marching while the music played with everyone staring at me???

What if nobody came to class???

What if, What if, What if???  =)

I just surrendered and gave my fears up to God!  I KNEW I wanted to do this and it didn't matter where it took me or how long it took to get there, I was going to lay it at His feet, have fun, enjoy the ride, do my best, and GO FOR IT!!

Now I am not only teaching CIZE twice a week, I added Insanity to the mix and teach it 2 days a week too!  I am loving every second and can't wait to see where it takes me!  Have you also dreamed about doing SOMETHING in the Fitness industry?  Personal Training?  Fitness Instructor?  Coach?  If you have, please contact me, I'd love to give you my advice and help you reach your goals!  Don't let your fears stand in your way, just go for it!  What's the worst that can happen?!?  =)

Getting certified was so much fun!

Loved getting to meet Fit and Funky, Danielle Natoni, herself!!  =)

The first class I taught was a SUCCESS!  Everyone loved it and we had a lot of fun!  =)

CIZE PREVIEW

So throughout the month of June I had access to the new workout program by Shaun T that is coming out on July 20th.  It has been SO MUCH fun to learn choreography and dance again and you have so much fun doing it you totally forget you're working out until the end when you're covered in sweat!  =)

So what happens when you know all the dances?  Is it boring?  Is it still a workout?

NO it's not boring and YES it is a workout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I had done that workout tons of times I decided to start putting it to different songs and it was a blast!  I would literally do about 5-10 different songs back to back and be drenched in sweat afterwards!  Such a fun workout!  Take a look below and let me know if you're interested in joining me!  I'm looking for 20 women to join one of my Fitness Accountability groups so we can dance the pounds away together, share recipes, have a meal plan and reach our goals!  Join by leaving your email in the comments or emailing me at kristinkfitness@gmail.com  I would LOVE to help you reach your goals!!

Sweet Potato Stew

After a long morning of working with my team and scheduling our upcoming Fitness Accountability groups, I was feeling very productive and wanted to go ahead and get dinner taken care of!

Do you ever look in your fridge and grab everything that needs to be cooked before it goes bad, put it together with a few more ingredients, and make a meal out of it?  This is one of my favorite ways to cook...just throwing things together and crossing my fingers it turns out OK.  =)

Today I had some meat that I had thawed a couple days ago to make Taco Soup, never got around to it, and now it needed to be cooked before it went bad.  I also had some sweet potatoes that were on the verge of growing roots into my pantry floor, so those needed to be cooked too.  I figured I could make this work so I grabbed some more ingredients and alas...Sweet Potato Stew was made, it was eaten, and it was a 10 out of 10 for everyone!

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs lean ground meat
  • 16 oz frozen spinach or 1 can of spinach
  • 3 sweet potatoes
  • 3 vegetable bullion cubes
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 can ranch style beans
  • 1 can green beans
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1-2 cans of water depending on your preference
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
  • Brown the meat in a pot.  Drain if needed.
  • While it's cooking, peel and dice your sweet potatoes and then add them to the pot, keeping it covered to cook to potatoes.
  • Once all the potatoes are in the pot you can add in the remaining ingredients (potatoes will not be cooked through yet) and let simmer on low for 4 hours.
  • Once it was time to eat we topped our stew with mozzarella cheese and paired it with HEB Gluten Free Cornbread.  This is seriously the BEST gluten free cornbread I have ever had!

Could dinner be any easier?  Try it and let me know what you think!!

Honey Veggie Mix

You know those nights when dinnertime is approaching and you have no idea what you're going to fix?!  Surely I'm not the only one...right?!?

Ok, well that happens to me often!  The days are busy and by the time we get home from one of the kids practices after school, they're ready to eat!  Yesterday was one of these days that I didn't plan for and I had nothing made.  We could have made sandwiches or something else super easy but I wanted to feed us some VEGGIES!!  I had some ground meat cooked in the fridge that was extra from a baked ziti dish I made for a friend the other night and I needed to use it!  So my wheels started turning...I'll just make bakes ziti!  The kids weren't having that!  They giggled as they yelled, "NOOOOO!!" in unison!   Apparently I make that a lot!  So a concoction it was!

I looked in the fridge and grabbed some things, looked in the pantry and did the same and got busy.

Can I just tell you that my thrown together meal was a hit with all 5 members of our family!  So delicious, so easy, and I made it with things I already had in the kitchen...WIN, WIN, WIN!!  The kids helped name it...Honey Veggie Mix.  Genius! ;)

Here is the recipe below.  I hope you enjoy!!

Disclaimer: I am not a chef (that just made me laugh out loud!) or remotely close to being an expert.  AT. ALL.  So if you don't see a measurement it means I just added a "normal" amount...so cilantro, honey, olive oil... I just added enough to saute the veggies!  If I had to guess on the honey I would say 4 Tbsp.?!  Anyway, it's not a science..add as you want!  =)

Ingredients
  1. rice (brown rice or quinoa would be even better!)
  2. olive oil
  3. honey
  4. 1 yellow bell pepper
  5. 1 red bell pepper
  6. 1 orange bell pepper
  7. 3 cups spinach
  8. cilantro
  9. 1 pound lean ground meat
  10. 1 can black beans
  11. 1 can Amy's Chunky Tomato Bisque
  12. salt
  13. pepper
  14. seasonings of your choice- I used Tony Chachere's
  15. cheese

Directions:
  1. Start cooking rice in a pot per directions on bag.
  2. Pour your olive oil and honey into a large pan and begin heating.
  3. Dice your peppers and put into a pan with spinach and cilantro.  Saute until veggies are soft and spinach is cooked down.
  4. Pour in cooked ground meat, black beans, and Tomato Bisque.  Stir it all together and add your seasonings.
  5. Rice should be finished so they you scoop some rice into a bowl, dish your meat mixture on top of the rice and top with cheese!  ENJOY!!!!

  1. 1 scoop protein mix (I use Shakeology!)
  2. 1 cup gluten free quick oats
  3. 4 Tbsp. apple sauce
  4. 2 Tbsp. of peanut butter
  5. 1 Tbsp. honey
  6. Coconut shavings (any amount you want)
  7. Chocolate chips or Peanut Butter chips

Mix items 1-6 together in a bowl.  Mash and mix with a spoon to even the ingredients out.  Then form them into an 8x8 pan sprayed with coconut oil or Pam, push chips on top and put them in the freezer for about 30 min-1 hour!  ENJOY!!

I hope you like them as much as we did!  You could also form them into balls if you'd rather!  My kids and I had a ton of fun making them together, as you can see the video above!  I encourage you to try it with your kiddos and let me know what yall thought!  If you video it, tag me in it so I can see!  @kristinkfitness  =)  They were a hit over here and now I make them often for their after school snacks!  It's so nice having a snack that they love and I can feel good knowing it's healthy for them!  =)  WIN, WIN!!

Food Is Not Your God

About a year ago I remember reading an article called "Food Is Not Your God" and I loved it!  Nobody wants to be obsessed with food, it's there to fuel us, to feed us when we're hungry, and give us energy.   Yes, it is also a way for friends and family to get together and make memories by going out to eat or having a party with delicious dishes over a football game or around the table at Thanksgiving.  Those times of making memories should be enjoyable...it's not to obsess over every bite, stress us out or make you so disappointed with yourself if you eat the "wrong" thing!  STOP!!

In one of my fitness accountability groups a lot of people were doing great with the workouts but it's the food that was a problem for most.  Why?  I think it's because we've been told that in order to lose weight or be healthy you have to completely cut out all food considered unhealthy.  As a coach I've been struggling with where I stand on this because most coaches host "Clean Eating" groups and "Eating all Organic" groups so I did too and although they've been successful and given everyone (myself included) healthier options and recipes, I don't want to come off as a 100% clean eater myself.  I'm not.  I never want people to think I am a 100% healthy eater ALL. THE. TIME or that I always eat organic and would NEVER drink a coke or eat a piece of cake.  That actually makes me laugh out loud because that's not me at all, nor do I want it to be me!  Would I rather feed my family something homemade than from a box...ABSOLUTELY!  But I'm not trying to pretend that it doesn't ever happen!  So I've been trying to figure out how I feel about the issue and here's what I've come up with so far and there are links at the bottom to help me out in what I'm trying to say =) ...

I think food is great! I don't think you should 100% deprive yourself of any of your favorite things whether it's coke, chips, or cookies.  SAY WHAT??  Yup that's what I said but keep listening and don't get it twisted...What I do think is more important is to limit your quantities and not over eat or stuff yourself.  Eat the things you like but maybe cut your portions in half, drink a coke once a week or month as a treat instead of daily, etc.  Don't obsess over every bite and beat yourself up when you didn't stick to your plan.  One unhealthy meal wont make you gain weight, just like one healthy meal wont make you lose weight!  Let's let that sink in for a minute...

Food is fuel and I feel like if we start using it as such instead of completely cutting things out and then over eating after week 2, we'd have a better relationship with food!  I am not saying go to McDonalds everyday and cut your food in half and you'll be good to go.  What I AM saying is stop beating yourself up over every unhealthy/non organic thing you eat!  We all feel better when our body is being fed right with a variety of fresh foods (Thank you Shakeology for your help!!).  We know this!  But things in moderation are OK.  We can't be on 100% of the time but we can do it 80% of the time and that's why I love the 80/20 Rule!  You eat well 80% of your week, indulge 20% of the week and WORK OUT!!  Working out not only improves your mood but it gives you so much more energy that then overflows and motivates you in every other aspect of your life too.

So how do I feel about the 21 Day Fix or Cleanses?  I think they're amazing!  Anything you do for your body to make you happy and healthy is a GREAT thing...eating healthy, doing a cleanse, portion control, working out...they are all good!  What's not good is when you start obsessing, talking negatively to yourself, and become consumed by it.

When any aspect of my life starts to feel stressful, whether it's finances, a decision I have to make, or a relationship, and I find myself getting worked up or thinking about it all the time, I just stop and refocus on Jesus instead of focusing on the thing I'm stressing about. Then, because our God is SO BIG, it makes my problem seem SO SMALL and so much more manageable.  God is the only influence that should rule your life; food, your appetite, and your weight should not be in control or be the root of any worrying!

Galatians 5:16 - So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

More on the 80/20 rule soon but in the mean time you can get introduced to it HERE.

I couldn't find the exact article I read years ago but here are 2 others I found that I really enjoyed and would love for you to read too!

http://www.stacymakescents.com/food-is-not-your-god

http://www.charismamag.com/life/health/19682-is-food-your-god

So here is a summary of what I'm trying to say:
Don't worry and think about food so much.  Food is NOT your God and should not consume so much of your thoughts.  Eat healthy meals because that is when we feel our best but indulge some of the time and don't feel guilty about it!  Food is enjoyable and the Lord wants us to feast and thank him for our blessings but he does not want us to be gluttons.  Things in our life seem like such big issues and can overtake our thoughts until we remember to give it to God and know that if he can heal the blind and raise the dead, he can surely help us in our relationships (with people or food), in our finances, decisions and every other aspect of our life!  =)

Pesto Zucchini Noodles

I'm allergic to gluten so I always have to buy rice noodles but the latest craze on zucchini or spaghetti squash noodles intrigued me so I decided to give it a try!  We bought my husband a spiral french fry maker for Christmas so I decided to test it out and see if it could co-exist as a noodle maker too! They look a little thick but honestly tasted delicious and I will for sure make it again and can't wait to use it for other things!!

I started by peeling 3 zucchini (1 per person you're cooking for) and then cut them in half to fit in my spiralizer better!

Then I put them one by one into the spiralizer and started twisting!  FYI- the end of the zucchini that wont fit through the spiralizer is delicious to eat raw with some hummus while you're cooking!  Just sayin'!  =)  You'll thank me later!

After that I pressed them in a paper towel to get the water out of them and then threw them in the skillet with some salt.  I didn't use any oil because they have so much water in them you just let that cook out.

I blotted them with a paper towel again before putting them in a bowl and mixing some garlic pesto that I had bought from HEB. Then I topped it with some sliced almonds and cherry tomatoes.  It was delicious!! Try it and let me know what you think!  Please share it with someone who you think would enjoy this meal!  It was very quick and easy!  ENJOY!!

Ingredients:
  1. zucchini
  2. pre made pesto
  3. cherry tomatoes
  4. sliced almonds
Could it be any easier?  =)

Well, HEL-LOOOO Turbofire!

Hi, I'm Kristin and I like to JAM OUT!!  Put some good music on and I will dance like nobody's business!  (I don't really understand that expression but I think that's how it goes!).

In order to workout consistently you have to actually ENJOY your workouts, right!?  I've done Bodypump, T25, 21 Day Fix, and PiYo schedules and I always enjoy them and I do seriously love each one I've done.  But a dance party workout?!  I seriously don't think it could get any better!  Although there is Hip Hop Abs and I'm trying that next so maybe it can get better?  We'll see!  ;)

Because of the new Beachbody On Demand I've been able to try other programs that I don't own.  Recently I've been doing some of the Turbofire workouts and let me just say...well, wait...let me just show you...

Do you see what I'm talking about??  THIS is fun!  THIS is a workout!  THIS is something I can do everyday and look forward to!  I can't wait to do this entire program and see what results I get out of it!  Cardio is always the biggest mind game for me and is the hardest part of my workouts but cardio like this...I CAN DO THIS!!  =)

Quinoa Stuffed Bell Peppers

Stuffed Bell Peppers...I see them everywhere and they're a great idea but once they're made how the heck do you eat them?!  We just cut them up which then made me wonder why we stuff them in the first place instead of just chopping the peppers from the beginning but I guess that's because the peppers would get too soft?!  Something to think about but regardless they were delicious and my 7 & 5 year old actually gave me a hug and thanked me while they praised how yummy they were! =) I was pretty shocked and made a mental note that I will keep this recipe on the list of regulars!  I actually made this recipe up...  I've seen lots of different recipes out there that I've wanted to try but last night my daughter had gymnastics and I didn't have a clue what I was cooking for dinner.  I got home and decided I would throw some things together to make a healthy dish and this is what I decided on!  I'm pretty proud of the spinach addition because nobody would EVER know it's in there!  So healthy and so yummy!!   Try them yourself and let me know what you think!

Ingredients:

  • Quinoa
  • 6 Bell Peppers
  • 2 pounds lean ground turkey or I used venison from our freezer (perks of a hunter husband!) which is super lean.
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 TBSP coconut oil
  • 1 cup chopped spinach (I chopped fresh spinach in my food processor)
  • 2 tomatoes, diced OR you can use 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 3 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle seasoning (it's salt free!)
  • pepper to taste (a little salt is delicious but if you're doing the 21 Day Fix then don't add it!)
  • grated cheddar cheese
Directions:

Cook Quinoa according to box.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Cut the top of each bell pepper and rinse out seeds. If you need to trim some of the pepper on the bottom so it stands up on the pan you can!

Place foil on a pan or casserole dish and place bell peppers inside.

Heat coconut oil in large skillet and add onion, garlic, and chopped spinach and saute for 5 minutes or until soft.

Add the ground meat and cook through.

Add the tomatoes and spices and mix well.

Once Quinoa is finished, mix it in the skillet and blend.

Tightly stuff the mixture into the peppers and then top with shredded cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes.  ENJOY!!!!  Please share or pin this recipe with someone you think would like it!  How do you eat your stuffed peppers?

The End of my 21 Day Fix and WHY I Cheated!

Do you see that?!?  That means that I'M FINISHED!!!!  Yay!!! I made it through my 21 days and I couldn't be more proud of myself!  I feel amazing and can't wait to post my full review but here is how my last 2 days went...

On Saturday, what I used to call my rest day, and I got up at 5:30 and pushed play on Dirty Thirty and Pilates.  I was almost done with my workouts when the rest of the house started waking up...what a great start to my day!!!

We got dressed and headed to my sons basketball game where he played the best game he has EVER played (granted this is his 3rd basketball game of his life...but it was the best, hands down!)  =)  He was on fire and made 4 baskets, stole the ball multiple times, and had some great rebounds!  I'm a proud momma!

Lunch was on track and then came a big crossroads in my journey.  We made plans to go with family to dinner...Mexican food (my favorite) so I had to decide what I was going to order!

I did my double workout today, I drank my Shakeology, I had a healthy lunch with plenty of leftover containers and I only had 1 MORE DAY left of my 21 Days...to cheat, or not to cheat?!?!

Well, I've been good for 20 days so far, would I really want to blow it the night of the 20th day, the EVE of my last day?!  That would be crazy right!?  There are plenty of things I could do to stick to it...10 chips with salsa (yellow), corn tortillas with chicken and veggies (yellow, red, green)  I could stick to the plan.  If it was earlier in my journey I wouldn't have even questioned sticking to it or not.  But,here's why I decided to CHEAT when I was almost done with my full 21 Day Fix!

This 21 Day Fix wasn't just a phase for me!  I didn't go into it with the attitude that I would do these 21 days and then go back to eating junk and large amounts of anything and everything I wanted.  No, I went into these 21 days looking to make healthier habits, wanting to learn how to eat the right portions, make healthier snack choices, and be on a consistent workout schedule!  I DID that and now that I'm finishing up, it's time for me to continue doing the healthy habits I've learned while also indulging a little now and then!  Shaun T calls it the 80/20 rule.  80% healthy, 20% indulgence and that's how I want to live!  Life is too short to count EVERY single calorie or to just never let loose with family and friends!  So I went out and had 2 skinny margaritas and shared a fajita plate with my husband.  It was delicious and we had a wonderful time with family!

I don't regret cheating and guess what?  I got up on Sunday and did my Yoga workout before church, had my Shakeology and continued on a healthy day.  I weighed myself (at a family members house because I don't own a scale!) to see the results of my 21 days and I lost 6 POUNDS TOTAL!  I feel amazing and I didn't gain it all back by eating some Mexican food!  Now, if I chose to cheat and indulge everyday I would, but not by doing the 80/20 rule!  The crazy thing is that I actually lost the least amount of weight from my other 21 Day Fixers in my Challenge Group!!  I lost the least at 6 pounds, then there were some 7 pounders, 10, 12, and even 16 pounds!  AMAZING!!

Feel free to read through each day of my 21 Day Fix for food ideas and my personal journey plus I will be blogging my review of each workout so check back soon for that!

I have Challenge Groups starting every single month so if you'd like to join one of my groups please comment below!  I would LOVE to help you reach your goals and the new 21 Day Fix Extreme comes out in Feb 2015!  Both programs are guaranteed to give you results so there is no risk!

Day 19 of the 21 Day Fix

I can't believe this is my last weekend of my 21 days!  What a journey it's been so far!  I can tell my body has changed but I don't own a scale so I wont know the numbers until the end when I'll go to a friends house to weigh myself!  =)  I really don't care about weight, I just go by how I FEEL!  If I'm  happy and feeling good in my clothes and daily life then that's my perfect weight!  When my clothes start getting tighter and I'm feeling sluggish and blah...I know it's time to make some changes!  =)

This morning I tried Greenberry Shakeology for the first time and it was delicious!  My usual Chocolate is so sweet and tastes like a yummy dessert so the Greenberry was a nice change and very refreshing!  I can't wait to try more recipes with it but here is the one I had today and will definitely repeat in the future!  =)

Today was a double day of Cardio Fix and Upper Fix.  I can really tell that I am getting stronger!  I really didn't feel like doing a double but pushed play twice and of course felt amazing afterwards!  Why do I ever even argue with myself...JUST DO IT!!!  =)

Day 19 down, 2 more to go!!!

Day 18 of the 21 Day Fix

Oh man...when that alarm went off this morning I did NOT want to get up!  I really wanted to roll over and go back to sleep.  I actually might have done that but I really had to pee so I had no other choice but to get out of bed..true story.  ;)

So I got up and was so tired that I knew if I wanted to kill this workout my usual slummy gear wouldn't work.  No, today I needed something fierce to fire me up so I naturally went for my camo pants!  Nothing says POWER better than camo!  Then I had some E&E to kick-start me into enthusiasm!  =)

I not only finished my double day of Total Body Cardio Fix and Pilates Fix,  I killed it!  I've said it before but there is no greater feeling then finishing what you set out to do!  WINNING!!!

I decided to try a different recipe today and I knew I needed coffee in it!  I'm really not a huge coffee fan, it has to be sweetened!  This was delicious and another recipe I loved! Try it and let me know what you think!!

I had a busy day and was at my sons school for most of it.  I loved being able to have lunch with him and I skipped out on getting fast food or eating at the cafeteria and instead ate a salad when I got home!

Day 17 of the 21 Day Fix

Today was Lower Fix and the 10 minute ab video!  I was a little excited that my workout wasn't going to be an hour long today and was looking forward to the break!  =)  I nailed Lower Fix! I really like this one and it has gotten SO MUCH easier for me compared to Week 1...it's amazing!  I thought the ab workout was a great workout but my back started to hurt!  I think I need a nicer yoga mat, something thicker...I'll get on that!

Lower Fix...Nailed It!

For dinner my husband cooked some fish that he had caught a while back and it was delicious!  He seasoned it with Mrs. Dash salt free seasonings, pepper, and gluten free corn flour in some coconut oil!  The crispiness of the breading was delicious and something I had missed in my diet lately!  =)

We paired the fish with a salad and I counted this plate as 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 green, and 1 teaspoon!

Day 16 of the 21 Day Fix

Day 16- Today was Upper Fix and Cardio Fix!  I really love having a schedule because I don't get up every morning and try and decide what workout to do and I think that's what makes the double week so much easier!  I just wake up, look at the schedule and push play!  No questions, just do it!  =)

My workouts went great and are getting a lot easier than they were in the first week!  I am just loving the feeling of waking up and getting it done!

I woke up at 5 to get my double done, do some work, and have some time before the kids wake up and look who decides to get up early too!  =)  I had an audience for the whole hour!  Love that little cutie and she actually loves watching me workout!

Ummm, I drank it before I could take a picture!  =)  DELISH!!

I LOVE that my new lifestyle is effecting my ENTIRE family!  The kids know we work out everyday, they ask about it and they love joining us!  Now that my husband is doing the program too it's just really changing us all for the better and I love the good habits we are ALL forming!

For dinner I had 1 yellow, 1 red, 1.5 greens left so I ate 1/2 a turkey burger on a gluten free piece of toast with mustard, lettuce and tomatoes with a side of veggies!  Doesn't look like much but it was actually really good and I had some tea afterwards to fill me up a little more!  It is the perfect amount of food!  No more overeating for this girl!!
